Vitiligo is a disease characterized by white patches on the skin. The disease develops as a result of autoimmune damage to melanocytes in the skin on the basis of genetic predisposition.
The prevalence in the population varies between 0.5-20% and can occur shortly after birth or at any time of life. In vitiligo, lesions may be limited or diffuse. However, knee, elbow, hand and foot, eye and mouth area are frequently involved.
Vitiligo is diagnosed by dermatologic examination. Wood light examination is helpful in the diagnosis. Laboratory evaluation can be used to detect other autoimmune diseases that may be related (Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Pernicious anemia, type 1 Diabetes, etc.). Skin biopsy can be performed in suspicious cases for definitive diagnosis of the disease. In the treatment, topical steroids, casinorin inhibitors, phototherapy and laser can be applied.
