Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) infections are water-filled blisters accompanied by mild itching and tingling that can be seen anywhere on the body, often on the face, lips and nose.
There are two types of HSV. HSV-1 is often seen above the lumbar region and is acquired in childhood. HSV-2 occurs in the lower back and is most common in adults and is often sexually transmitted. In individuals infected with HSV, the virus remains dormant in nerve cells.
The disease can be triggered by low body resistance, fever, flu infections, stress and skin irritation. Topical antiviral and antibiotic creams can be used in the treatment of the disease, and in severe cases, oral syrups or pills can be used.
